This week’s post takes a second look at a Limber Pine first styled in 2019. With a mop of new shoots there is the potential to fully clothe the tree this time.
Where we began in July 2024.
Following cleanup of old needles and wiring. And deadwood was found beneath the bark—more about that below.
A time-lapse of the branch setting. Maciek assists. At the end you can see a branch being cut off on the lower left. We took a break after this, as setting the branches in 26 seconds is a bit tiring.
After a final tweak of the buds by Carmen to align the needles.
Maciek uncovers a large area of deadwood in the front. A plus for our design, the tree gained a great deal in age by this one move. Active woundwood is seen as a brown roll of tissue on the edges. This won’t cover over, as a younger and stronger growing pine might after a cut off limb. The live tissue edge on old pines appears to be active for a time, and then stops and barks up. We will let the newly exposed deadwood silver naturally as it is still in a box, no rush. There is lots of resin on it and that will prevent decay.
