Pinching is an integral part of the growth management process on elongating species: trees that produce one flush of elongation throughout their growing season. In the spring, we must transition the energy from the strong growing tips back into the interior of our trees in order to create refined, beautiful ramification. Watch as Ryan pinches new growth on one of Mirai's most iconic Douglas firs, and explains the fundamentals of how and why we pinch. For more on pinching to manage growth, start your free trial of Mirai Live at live.bonsaimirai.com. (Source Facebook) www.facebook.com

https://stonelantern.com/blogs/bonsai-bark/tie-pots Three weeks ago I potted about 50 American larches into Tie Pots and I'm blown away by how easy it is once you get going. Using wire and the little tie posts to secure the trees is a real breakthrough. It takes less than half the time it would take to pot into conventional bonsai training pots with less disturbance to the roots. (Source Facebook) stonelantern.com

After the initial elongation of any larch species, we must begin the process of transitioning energy from the strong, growing tips back to the interior of the tree. We remove the coarse first flush of stored energy to create finer flushes of growth to build ramification. This week on Mirai Live, build your skills in larch growth management, and pruning strategy over the course of the year to create beautiful, fine ramification on your own larches. Grow your understanding of the timing and indications that guide your pruning process. Tonight, 6pm PDT, live.bonsaimirai.com. Start your free trial of Mirai Live to watch.
