For Ryan Neil, the Ponderosa Pine has always defined the essence of a tree, shaped by his childhood in the Rocky Mountains. Fishing trips on the Flat Tops of western Colorado, early mornings on Derby Mesa, and the sight of Ponderosa branches swaying in the wind created a lasting connection to the species. These trees, rooted in memory and nostalgia, became a foundational part of his understanding of nature, time, and bonsai. After returning from Japan, Ryan faced skepticism about Ponderosa Pine as a bonsai species—many believed its needles couldn’t be reduced. But with the right horticulture and technique, he saw its potential. Creating a true Pine forest in bonsai is rare and challenging, requiring careful spacing, balance, and form. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the Rockies, he set out to capture that vision. This forest has undergone years of evolution. Originally planted on a maple slab, it endured hardships like the 2020 heat dome, which claimed a key tree. In 2024, a new tree was introduced, bringing fresh energy while maintaining the composition’s essence. Now, placed on a Jan Culek slab that mirrors the rolling granite of the Rockies, the forest continues to mature. Refinements will enhance the balance, further capturing the spirit of Derby Mesa and the iconic presence of Ponderosa Pine in the wild. This composition challenges traditional perspectives on Pine bonsai, redefining how Ponderosa is viewed and expanding the possibilities of forest-style plantings.
