Mountain hemlock, Tsuga mertensiana, is a native North American species that has long been utilized in American bonsai, but has never truly been spotlighted or had true study invested in it. With this piece, we explore what is possible if we reference the natural alpine form of the mountain hemlock in all its environmental and elemental conditions. Over the course of this tree’s transformation, we dove deep into the impact the environment can have on a tree; the pointed influence of alpine conditions, as well as the unique apical form, led us to craft this very traditional bonsai into a more natural representation of a wild Mountain Hemlock.
