In our summer stream focused on grafting and watering, we used an approach graft technique to place Kishu Juniper onto Rocky Mountain Juniper stock. Now, we return to that tree to answer some of the most common and important questions about grafts: what’s the strategy behind knowing when a graft has taken, and what steps need to be taken next? In this feature, we explore the indicators of a successful graft, the reasoning behind removing roots first, how we open up the graft to check for success, and the continued maintenance and safe handling of the graft to ensure it eventually takes over as the dominant foliage mass on the tree.
