Incredible "before, during, and after" photos of the defoliation of a vibrant Japanese Red Maple at the Museum. Defoliating trees helps induce the growth of new branches and leaves, can lead to brighter autumn colors, and is one of the many techniques bonsai artists use to manage the balance and shape of a tree. After a deciduous tree has been defoliated, it is easier to see the silhouette and understand the shape of the bonsai as the artist intended. Our "Winter Silhouettes" exhibit is over for the season, but there are plenty of bare bonsai on show. Stop by to witness this once-a-year display!
