Shitakusa, literally translated as
Shitakusa, literally translated as “undergrass,” is a Japanese botanical art lesser-known in western bonsai practice: companion plantings displayed with and reflective of a bonsai to create a complete composition when viewed together. Tonight on Mirai Live, kusamono artist Young Choe returns to share her expertise in this art form by creating companion plantings for selected Mirai trees. Young will build these companions from the ground up: from choosing a ceramic, to selecting plants that evoke the tree’s environment, to creating the full display. Learn how a ceramic piece and companion planting respond to one another, and how shitakusa elevates a bonsai display. Grow your understanding of this unique art, and learn to more fully tell your tree’s story. Tonight, 6pm PDT, live.bonsaimirai.com. See it Thursday in the archive.
